I sometimes get surprised by clickbait headlines on my Facebook feed like:
And wonder where the hell the researchers found a population of same-sex couples that identified themselves according to opposite sex gender stereotypes and then divided housework accordingly.
Neither click bait article linked to the actual public press release of the original study. It was not a survey of same sex couples, their gender identities and how they divided housework. It was a survey of a 1000 Americans given descriptions of opposite and same sex couples and some leading trait descriptions that were meant to make them impose gender stereotypes to each person in the couple and then what a surprise they assigned household tasks according to gender stereotypes.
My husband and I are not a knife and fork. We assign household tasks by either:
- Mexican stand-off.
- Pulling our arms into our shirt sleeves, yelling, “I HAVE NO ARMS!” until the other sighs and does whatever we didn’t want to do.
